As I was enjoying a beer while reading my Beer related RSS feeds, I stumbled upon this article on Beernews.org that I thought you might find interesting called “Beer helps your bones says study“. According to this article, the web is buzzing with the results of this new study that was published in the latest issue of Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.

What the article actually says is:

High silicon content in beer is helpful for bone density and it isn’t the first to do so.

Happy New Beer! New idea: Nationwide OpenBeer Events!

Dear Beer Loving Friends,

I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year, or as my friend @cpil put it, Happy New Beer! Let’s hope that the new year and the new decade, will bring us all health and prosperity! I personally will drink a beer to that!

Nation wide OpenBeer Events!

I was thinking that many friends from other towns in Greece would love to be at an OpenBeer event. So, I thought, why not team up with someone in every Greek town that is interested in this event, an organize it there too, at the exact same day and time! As organizer of the event I will get to choose the day and time, but you guys in Thessaloniki, Larisa, Herakleio, Rethymno and anywhere else in Greece, can get to choose the Place! So, if you like this idea and want to get involved, just post it in the comments below or email me at sp.papaspyropoulos@gmail.com.

What will they be called

Each OpenBeer Event can have the name of the Town in front and then “OpenBeer” and following that, the number of the event in that town. So, OpenBeer IV will actually be Athens OpenBeer IV and if for example you guys in Thessaloniki decide to have one it will be called Thessaloniki OpenBeer I!!! Then, each town will get its own place suggestion page and poll page for you to vote on here on the www.openbeerevent.com blog! Rocking! What do you think?

I think that having many OpenBeer Events all over Greece at the same time will be great fun, plus we can post everything Live on Twitter and Facebook as it happens!

Greek OpenBeer Day!

Looking forward to your suggestions and ideas! Come on people lets have the 1st ever Greek OpenBeer day!!!

Please, if you are interested in being your town’s representative, tell me before Midnight Tomorrow, so I can find the time to organize the suggesting/voting/event thing in time. Keep in mind that the next OpenBeer Event or Greek OpenBeer Day will take place on the 14th of January 2010! The only thing you need to do, is call the suggested venue and book the place for your OpenBeer event!

Mythos Beer

Today was relaxing day! The best thing to relax with, for me at least, is a nice cold pint of beer. So I went to my favorite door, the fridge door, opened it and grabbed me a Mythos! Mythos is a Lager beer made by www.mythosbrewery.gr. It has a nice rich flavor and is preferred by many. Some beer lovers call it the best Greek Beer and I think I will agree with them! Especially when it is cold,Mythos has a great taste and also a great aftertaste!

Mythos Lager

I like my Mythos with cheese, with a good selection of meats and also with various nuts. If though by any chance I am out of all the above, it still tastes great on its own!

I checked the Mythos Beer page that is on the Mythos Brewery website (http://www.mythosbrewery.gr/index.asp?c=37) and it is full of great info. For example, Mythos has won the Superior Taste Award and according to the website the reasons for this award are:

having a clear, golden appearance
offering an excellent long – lasting foam formation
being characterized by complex, yet well defined aromas dominated by fruity aromas
offering a balanced taste with fruity nuances and hops, a taste with a subtle touch of sweetness that enhances pleasure
being a dynamic, tasty beer with rich, long-lasting clear aftertaste and the appropriate touch of bitterness that makes it so tasty.

I am sure that if you are Greek you have tasted Mythos. If you aren’t, well, next time you are in Greece give it a try, I am sure you will love it!

Rethymniaki Beer

Rethymniaki

On Sunday I went to a Taverna here in Rethymno, Crete and I felt that the best thing to have with my food was beer. So I asked the waiter what was available and he mentioned many brands. I chose a beer called Rethymniaki which is a local beer that is made in Armenous, a small village and I think is only available in Rethymno. It could be available in other areas of Crete but I can’t be sure about that. Anyway, I am happy I made that choice!

Anyway, Rehtymniaki is a Biological beer that has two flavors. One flavor is Lager and the other is Dunkel. The maker of the beer, a German that has moved to Rethymno called Bernd Brink, calls the Lager version “Blond” and the Dunkel version “Black”.

The Blond version (called Xanthia in Greek) has a smooth taste and a nice deep gold color. It is very nice to have this beer with light food but I am sure that it would be great if served alone too. The Black version (called Mavri in Greek) is more thick and tasty with a deep redish color. When drinking it, you can feel that it is stronger than its Lager counterpart (if you have had the lager before that is). This beer is recommended for cheese and a selection of hams and meats. At least that is what I think.

According to the website www.all4beers.com, both Rethymniaki beers are made according to the German Law of 1516 concerning beer purity. So they are both traditionally made and have 4.8% Alcohol.
